Friday December 6, Tejano Ranch will host one of the biggest shows of the year. Poteet Tejano superstars David Lee Garza y Los Musicales will meet Mexican powerhouse Ramon Ayala y Sus Bravos Del Norte for a Tejano-Norteño accordion showdown to remember at the north Austin Tejano club.
Over the past four decades, accordionist and bandleader David Lee Garza has built a musical legacy that few can match. While his group has been the launching pad for other legendary performers like Ram Herrera, Emilio Navaira, Oscar G, Jay Pérez, and Marcos Orozco, "DLG" has maintained a distinct sound that some say is quintessentially Tejano: bright accordion matched with keyboards and saxophone to a strong danceable beat. Just last month, DLG took home the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album for his latest album, Just Friends, a collaborative effort with fellow Tejano voices like Marcos Orozco, David Farias, Gary Hobbs, Joe Posada, and Adalberto Gallegos.
After beginning his career in the early 1960s with Cornelio Reyna as Los Relampagos Del Norte, Ramon Ayala is almost a genre unto himself, having enjoyed unrivaled success in Conjunto and Tejano and virtually defining the modern Norteño genre. After scoring hit after hit with Reyna, Ayala went on to form his current band, in the 1970s. His string of hits includes classics like "Ya No Llores," "Hay Ojitos," "Un Rinconcito En El Cielo," "Amor de Juventud," "Tragos Amargos," and many, many more. Long story short: WOW! A double bill with masters like this is a very rare event that would normally seen at a festival or outdoor venue. The Tejano Ranch dance floor should be the warmest place in town!
Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m. Cover is $20 before 9 p.m., and $25 after 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome. View the Facebook event here.
