Rancho Alegre Conjunto Festival Artist Spotlight: Chencho Flores y Su Conjunto

Chencho FloresChencho Flores is about as old school conjunto as it gets. A few years shy of 90 years old, Chencho first started playing his accordion on old 6th street in the late 1940s. Throughout the years, he and his brother Frank played all over the east side; a history that has given rise to a nickname, “original kings of 6th street.”

Chencho went on to spend a number of years with Bradley Jaye Williams and Isidro Samilpa and others in Conjunto Los Pinkys, recording several albums, and maintaining a near-legendary residency at the White Horse on Sunday afternoons. In 2015, Conjunto Los Pinkys were inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame.

In 2016, Chencho branched out with his own conjunto, which features regular players, John Majalca on bass, legendary bajo sexto master Chente Alonzo, and fellow former Pinky Augie Arreola on drums. Brother Frank Flores also sits in from time to time.
